Fishermen flocked to Island Lake for UMD’s 14th annual Big Jig Ice Fishing tournament.

Eight-hundred anglers fished for the heaviest walleyes, bass and crappies to win a $4,000 dollar prize.

Money raised from the event will go to a scholarship fund for UMD athletes.

Organizers say this year the contest was held on Island Lake to bring out a bigger crowd and a better chance at catching sport fish.

“Turnouts been great, the feedback that we have been getting has been fantastic,” UMD Assistant Athletic Director of Revenue and Special Projects Jay Finnerty said. “People are excited that it’s a new location. They’re catching some game fish.”

This year a kids division for the tournament was added.

The winner took home a plaque and $50 dollar prize.
