It’s been a long time since UMD Basketball hosted a playoff game at Romano Gym. A drought that comes to an end this week, as UMD hosts Winona State in a 1st Round NSIC Tournament game.
The Bulldogs last hosted a playoff game during the 2006 NCC Tournament. The last NSIC Tournament home game was in 2004.
It wasn’t easy, UMD won four of its last five games to lock down 4th place in the NSIC North Division.
Coach Matt Bowen admits his team finished lower than he expected, but he’s proud of the way the Bulldogs played down the stretch.
Now the Bulldogs want to see plenty of fans in the stands to cheer them on to a win.
“Hopefully we can get this placed not only with students, but the community as well,” said UMD senior Brett Ervin. “Hopefully they get loud and make some noise for us.”
“This has been a season where we’ve struggled a little bit getting fan support,” said Bowen. “It’s not from a lack of interest as much as we’ve played at the wrong times. During Thanksgiving break, during Christmas break. We play during home hockey games. We’re playing on Wednesday night, we are the only college show in town. I’m really excited to get as much support and a true home court advantage. Those things make a big difference and the more people we can get, the louder we can get, the better opportunity we’ll have to have a great game.”
Tipoff in Wednesday’s game is set for 7 p.m.
The UMD Women’s Basketball team visits Augustana for their 1st round contest. That game tips Wednesday at 6 p.m.
