The Madness is coming, but before March ushers in Minnesota’s State Hockey Tournaments, the end of February is section final week.
The first Section 7 title will be handed out Wednesday as Hermantown meets the Marshall at AMSOIL Arena.
Both teams are no strangers to state. Hermantown is the defending section champ, and has been State runners up five years in a row.
Meanwhile, Marshall last went to The Tourney in 2013, when Hermantown played in section 5.
Over the years, the Hawks and Hilltoppers have forged one of the Northland’s best hockey rivalries and both sides are looking forward to writing the next chapter.
“We’ve been rivals for a long time,” said Hermantown Coach Bruce Plante. “They’ve got a good program, a good team, but we have a good team and a lot of quality guys too.”
Despite being the top ranked team in Class A, and two wins over Marshall this season, Hermantown isn’t taking its rival lightly.
“You can’t tak any game for granted,” said Hermantown senior Nate Pionk. “In the playoffs anyone can win, you look at some of the upsets around the state. We have to come and play our game. If we play our game, we’ll have some success.”
The Hilltoppers know they’ll need to play their best game to beat the Hawks.
“You know they’re going to leave it all out there,” said Marshall senior John McKenna. “We’ve got to work just as hard, match their intensity every shift. Hermantown’s a great team, it’s fun to play those guys, especially on a stage like this.
“We feel it’s another opportunity,” added Marshall Coach Brendan Flaherty. “They’re a giant for sure, number one one in the state all year, but to be the best you have to beat the best.”
Puck drop in the 7A Championship is set for about 7 p.m. The 7AA Championship between Duluth East and Elk River will be played Thursday.
