A local will be the first Minnesotan to complete the world’s largest sailboat race.

It’s a 40,000 mile race that starts and ends in the UK.

Duluthian, Robert Giuliani, will stop in 16 different countries through his expedition.

He says his biggest fear is the unknown.

“It’s Mother Nature.  She can throw anything at you. Waves can get to 20 feet high, weather and storms get in the way.  There’s points where it’s just dead water and you’re bobbing around out there,” said Giuliani.

He found no better way to celebrate a milestone in his life.

“Just wanted to take the opportunity because I had some free time.  I’m turning 40 this year so I figured it’d be a perfect time to do it and I just signed up and got accepted!”

Giuliani leaves August 30th.
