The town of Hayward bustled with excitement this weekend.

Thousands of spectators and outdoor enthusiast lined Main Street to get a front roll seat of all of the action.

“It’s an amazing thing that you can ski 51 and 54 kilometers and have it be decided in the last 5 seconds of the race,” said Paul Harris who skied the Birkie 30 times. “But there’s such an adrenaline at that time that the finishers come in that we’re just here to cheer on whoever can pull off a victory.”

With people coming all over the world to Hayward, the major event is expected to bring at least a $5 million dollar economic impact to the region.
