The small town of Ely is bringing something new to this year’s Winter Festival.

This first ever Beard and Mustache Contest will be held Saturday night.

“It fits the area and the history of it.  Up here, the two biggest industries in the past were mining and logging.  Miners tend to shave their face and the loggers grow the beard because they work outside and we wanted to honor that a little bit,” said contest creator, Shaun Thosa.

All the bearded and beard loving people can stop by at the Boathouse Brew Pub.

Fifty participants have entered the event so far.

The event will feature four competitive categories including full beard natural, mustache, modified beard and freestyle beard.

The contestants will be battling for unique trophies crafted in Illinois.

Organizers hope it’s a great boost for the economy.

“We need things to help the economy here in Ely in the wintertime.  The wintertime festival is always a big draw and this is just another thing on the table to enjoy when you come up,” said Thosa.

The contest starts at 6 p.m. February 7.

There will also be live music.

There’s a charity component to the event, with mustache shaped cookies on sale the night of the event.

All proceeds from those sales will go to the Ely Area Food Shelf.
