More than 10 area high schools attended the first “Construct Tomorrow” Career Exploration Event to find out what it means to have a career in the building trades.

Students were encouraged to ask questions to representatives of several different unions.

They tried out some of the equipment they might be using as painters, iron workers or electricians.

These hands on projects encouraged 11th grader, Nicole Nuwham, to become more handy.

“I can do what I want even if it’s a guy job.  It’s not really that hard,” Nuwham expressed.

She has more confidence after the event that she can do anything.

“A lot of construction is usually guys so it’s nice to have some girls.  It’s not as weird.”

Organizers hope to make this an annual event.
