A 148–unit apartment building is one step closer to becoming a reality in Duluth.

City councilors have put the project on the consent agenda, meaning it is non-controversial and should pass at Monday night’s city council meeting.

The building will go up on 21st Avenue East and London Road, and nearly all units will have a view of the lake.

The city hopes this project can be the first step in dealing with the housing shortage.

“We’ve recently completed a housing study that identified a need for 4,400 new housing units in the city of Duluth in the next 5 years, and so this is a good start. We have a ways to go, but this is a good start to meeting that housing need that we currently see in the city,” said Chris Eng, Director of Business and Economic Development for the City of Duluth.

The project is estimated to cost $36 million.

Apartments are expected to be ready by the fall of 2016.
