In the middle of the Northwoods, it’s not the easiest task to eat organic.
“There was such a lack,” said Sonja Jewell, owner of Organic Roots Bistro in Ely. “There’s really no organic foods in this area.”
But that all changed when Jewell, a certified nutritionist, opened the doors of the bistro.
“This is actually an extension of my wellness center because basically I had so many clients that needed a healthy place to eat,” Jewell said.
It’s her job to teach people how to live a healthy lifestyle without breaking the bank.
“When you eat real nutritious foods you won’t be eating as much because your body will be satisfied with a lot less,” Jewell explained.
No GMOs or artificial ingredients get past this store owner.
“I usually check every label out to make sure there is nothing bad in there,” smiled Jewell.
If you’re looking for a new lunch spot, Organic Roots has a rotating menu, including fresh soup and sandwiches.
“There’s like 70,000 chemicals let alone in our foods and the more we can do to kind of limit the burden I think it’s going to make a big difference,” she said.
Organic Roots Bistro is a small shop that’s filling a niche and bringing Ely back to basics in healthy eating.
“If you put bad gas in your car your car isn’t going to run perfectly,” Jewell said. “It’s the same with your body too if you put bad food in your body it’s not going to work.”
In the summer, Organic Roots Bistro takes advantage of what the local farms have to offer by selling fresh fruits and veggies in the shop.
Organic Roots Bistro is located at 141 East Chapman Street in Ely.
