A disturbing story was gaining attention Tuesday in the Village of Poplar involving a special memorial.

The Richard I Bong memorial plaque has been spray painted with the words: “Vote Randy Jones.”
Jones is running for village trustee.

The city told FOX 21 Tuesday that it was working to remove the graffiti, but that the plaque might be on private property.

No arrests have been made.

Richard I. Bong grew up in Poplar and is credited with shooting down 40 Japanese aircraft during World War II.
