The Great Lakes Aquarium is seeking a hefty donation from the city to help complete a new exhibit.
The attraction is asking for $75,000 from Duluth’s surplus tourism tax fund to finish construction on their new Discovery Center.
Aquarium directors tell FOX 21 they ran into unforeseen costly engineering issues.
The Discovery Center will serve as the focal point for their educational program.
“Every year we have about 10,000 youth go through structured educational programming in this facility,” Great Lakes Aquarium Executive Director Jack LaVoy said. “That number is continuing to grow. Its necessitated us in adding new space for education.”
Aquarium officials have a hearing with city councilors Thursday.
They are hoping to get approval for funding next Monday.
