Union: Duluth Postal Center To Stay Partially Open

Duluth’s mail processing center is now positioned to sort some types of mail, according to a union official, and that means many workers will keep their jobs at the facility – even after the U.S. Postal Service announced the Duluth processing center would be closing April 18.

Todd Fawcett, president of the local postal workers union, told FOX 21’s Dan Hanger Thursday night that employees are relieved, optimistic and excited about the latest positive news.

Manager told employees Thursday that their jobs will likely be saved – possibly all 78 of them, according to Fawcett.

The plan now is for the center to stay partially open.

Fawcett says local mail is expected to be handled at the local Duluth processing center that includes zip codes starting with 556, 557 and 558.

Fawcett says any mail sent outside those zip codes will be sent down to the Twin Cities.

With this said, Fawcett stressed Thursday that all of this is not completely figured out, but it’s definitely good news for Duluth.

More details are expected to be released in July.
