DULUTH, Minn. – More than 1,000 people are in Duluth this week for a regional mining conference taking place at the DECC.

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration is hosting the event.

The conference is focused on advances in environmental technology, policy, mining, and industrial materials.

“Doing something more with iron than making taconite pellets. There is really a need and an opportunity for value added iron, so we’ve done a lot of talking about that. One of the unique things about that, which makes it timely is that the energy landscape is changing,” said new Minnesota Section SME Chair Mike Perala.

Despite more than 600 miners being laid off we’re told the conference is still up-beat and looking to the future.
