It’s only been 3 months since families struggling with homelessness moved in to the Steve O’ Neil apartments for a safe, affordable and supportive place to live.

That feeling of comfort though has been tarnished after a visitor was stabbed multiple times inside the building.

The call for help came came in at 8:22 Thursday night for a report of a man down at the apartments on West 4th Street.

When Duluth Police arrived they discovered 45 year old Deland Johnson on his back in the middle of the building’s lobby with several stab wounds to the chest.

A 21 year old male acquaintance was arrested.

Officials with CHUM, which provides services to residents, tell Fox 21 they are trying to minimize any trauma to tenants while also reviewing security procedures.

“What we are doing now is reviewing all of that safety, all of that visitor police, reviewing how people are allowed to enter the building and who gets to stay and when.  We are combining trespass lists from CHUM and from Center City,” said CHUM’s Executive Director, Lee Stuart.

Meanwhile, the stabbing victim is hospitalized in critical condition at Essentia St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

The 21 year old suspect is behind bars for a 2nd degree assault.

Pending being formally charged is expected to happen Monday.
