For some area high school students, Tuesday was a day for “action”…with emphasis on the A–C–T.

High school juniors took the ACT Tuesday, so the other grades have a day off.

Students from Duluth East chose to use their day off to volunteer and give back to their community.

Fox 21 caught up with a group doing some landscaping and gardening at Hartley Nature Center.

The students say it was nice to be outdoors and get some work done, and that staff members at Hartley really enjoyed the extra help.

“They’ve been really glad; they need volunteers a lot,” said Duluth East freshman Lauren Nyenhuis. “This program just really thrives off that. So they’ve all been really glad and really receiving of it.”

Students also volunteered with Animal Allies and Second Harvest Food Bank.
