Empire Mine in Upper Peninsula to Halt Production Until Fall

300 Workers Affected by Shut Down in Upper Peninsula

Cliffs Natural Resources says it will temporarily shut down the Empire Mine in the Upper Peninsula in June and resume production in the fall.

Company spokeswoman Patricia Persico says the mine in Marquette County will be closed from late June through October.

TV station WLUC says the move affects more than 300 workers.

Persico says the decision is a response to a high level of iron-ore imports into the United States.

She says the company will monitor the market throughout the next several months to see if the mine can reopen earlier.

Persico says a crew will perform maintenance while the mine is closed.
