Simonson Announces He’s Not Running for Mayor of Duluth

Simonson Says He Won't Run for Mayor in Duluth

Minnesota State Representative Erik Simonson will not be running for Duluth’s mayor.

He made the announcement in an email Friday.

He said of his decision, “I want to thank all of the individuals, organizations, family and friends whom have reached out to encourage me to run for Mayor of Duluth. And while it would be an incredible honor to serve in that capacity, the timing is simply not right for me now. My priorities are my family, and serving central and west Duluth in the Minnesota Legislature, and frankly there are a number of critical issues to Duluth that I feel better positioned to advance from my seat in the legislature.”

He continues, “Duluth is at yet another crucial turning point. There are many amazing economic development opportunities happening, and many more potential projects on the horizon. The next Duluth mayor will have to balance new growth and the needs of our communities, and I hope that they do so from a regional perspective including all parties.”

Currently, councilor Emily Larson is the only candidate in Duluth’s mayoral race.
