Road Collapses Near Red Cliff

No one was injured after a culvert collapsed on Highway 13 just south of Red Cliff, Wisconsin.

Commissioner Tom Toepfer with the Bayfield County Highway Department says it happened after 9 a.m. Wednesday.

He said crews were in the process of closing the road when it gave way to a hole five feet deep and about 10 to 15 feet long which took up an entire lane.

Officials say it was caused by a pipe that failed underneath the road and washed away gravel so it could no longer support the blacktop.

An excavator had been brought out to evaluate repairs.

It could take up to a few days to repair and officials say roads may remain closed during that time.

Authorities are suggesting northbound traffic take WIS 13 to County C, north back to WIS 13 for a detour.

They say to reverse those directions for southbound traffic.

Toepfer added that multiple agencies responded including those from the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, local fire departments, the Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
