DNR Seeks Comments on Chambers’ Grove Aquatic Habitat Project

DNR Seeks Comments on Project Along Lower St. Louis River

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is accepting public comments from May 25 to June 24 on an environmental assessment worksheet prepared for the Chambers’ Grove aquatic habitat enhancement project in Duluth, about 20 river miles upstream from Lake Superior.

The Chambers’ Grove project is located on a side channel of the Lower St. Louis River that has become partially blocked by a shoal deposited in the 2012 flood.

Artificial structures along the riverfront have reduced habitat for juvenile fish.

The DNR intends to use natural channel design techniques to enhance spawning habitat for Lake Superior migratory fish species, particularly lake sturgeon, by constructing three riffle features about 1.4 miles below the Fond du Lac Dam on the St. Louis River in Duluth.

The project will include removing an engineered retaining wall along the shoreline and naturalizing the bank with vegetation.

Designs will include access features planned by the city of Duluth.

The project supports the Lower St. Louis River area of concern remedial action plan.

The agency will take comments during a 30-day public review period from May 25 to June 24.

A copy of the worksheet is available online at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/input/environmentalreview/chambers-grove/index.html.

A hard copy may be requested by calling 651-259-5157.

The document is available for public review at:
