Victim in Fatal Restaurant Shooting Identified in Bemidji Shooting

At 10:00 a.m., on Saturday June 13, 2015, the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at the MI Rancho Restaurant located at 677 Anne St. NW, Bemidji, MN.

Responding officers were told by witnesses the restaurant was not yet open for business and there were only employees present in the store.

A former employee, identified as 32-year-old Otoniel Carranza of Bemidji, MN, had forced his way into the back door of the business and started an altercation with several employees.

This altercation ended with a shooting resulting in the death of the former employee.

Beltrami County Deputies and officers from Bemidji PD began investigating the scene and immediately identified the shooter who was taken into custody.

Investigators from the Sheriff’s office and BCA began interviewing witnesses with assistance from members of the local Safe Trails Task Force, Bureau of Indian Affairs and Border Patrol.

Crime scene team members from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension assisted with the forensic examination of the crime scene.

The autopsy is being conducted by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner and investigators are awaiting results from the autopsy.

The identity of others involved in this incident including that of the shooter will not be released at this time.

No charging decision has been made at this time as the investigation is still on-going.
