Essentia Health and Kohl’s teamed up to give out 1,300 life jackets.

The event was all part of Alive with Life Jackets, a campaign to teach kids and their parents about water safety.

Locals lined up in Kohl’s parking lot for the complimentary gear which came in four different sizes.

“Unintentional injury is the number one killer of children,” Essentia Health injury prevention coordinator Jenn Hoff said. “For children ages one to four drowning is actually the number one killer.”

More than $42,000 worth of life jackets were given away.

The Minnesota law requires all children under age 10 to wear a life jacket on any boat or watercraft that’s not docked.
