Victims of BWCA Canoe Rescue Identified

 A youth church group out of Rochester, Minn. is safe following a canoe rescue in the Boundary Waters.

The victims are Matthew Knight, 37, of Duluth, Josiah Murray, 18, Asher Bloom, 15, Grant Call, 17, all of Rochester.

All three teens were paddling on Basswood Lake and lost control of their canoe in the rapids near Upper Basswood Falls, according to Lake County Authorities.

At one point, Bloom’s leg was pinned in the water between the damaged canoe and the rocks.

Crews were able to free him, but he was nearly unconscious during the last 30 minutes of the rescue and was suffering from extreme hypothermia.

The group was airlifted to safety and taken to the hospital.

Bloom is expected to be okay.
