Bear Activity Temporarily Closes Apostle Island

Bear Prompts Closing of Island Near Bayfield

A temporary closure to all use is in place for the northeast portion of Oak Island, including campsite 6 within Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, due to increased bear activity.

The closure is in effect beginning 3:00 p.m. on July 10, 2015.

One resident bear is frequenting the area and has exhibited behavior that indicates it is not afraid of humans.

To the knowledge of park rangers, this bear has not gotten human food – yet.

The help of visitors is needed to make sure that no food is left unattended and any bear activity is reported immediately to Park Headquarters at 715-779-3398, ext. 122.

The closure will be re-evaluated at least weekly.

As soon as it appears the bear will stay away from visitor use areas, the closed portion of the island will be reopened
