Xcel Energy outages drop to 96K; no estimate on full power

(AP) – As the Twin Cities area cleans up from overnight storms, Xcel Energy says around 96,000 customers were still without power by Saturday afternoon, mostly in the western and eastern Twin Cities metro area.

Xcel says around 225,000 customers in Minnesota and western Wisconsin lost power when the storms hit late Friday and early Saturday, but its crews worked through the night, and that other crews from five states were dispatched to aid in restoring service.

The company says it does not have an immediate estimate on when power will be fully restored, but warns that some customers might not get power back until Sunday night.

Xcel Regional Vice President Laura McCarten says its challenging working through the snarled mess of downed trees and power lines and broken poles.
