Fond du Lac Band Gets $6M in Federal Broadband Grants
Fond du Lac Band Gets Millions for Broadband
The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is getting $6 million in federal grants to improve Internet service on its northeastern Minnesota reservation.
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack tells The Associated Press the grants will leverage another $2 million to make around $8 million available for the project.
Vilsack also says Garden Valley Telephone Company in the northwestern Minnesota town of Erskine and Consolidated Telephone Company in the east-central city of Brainerd will get loans of over $12 million each to help improve phone and Internet service.
Vilsack says expanding broadband access is “extraordinarily important” for rural residents.
He says it creates opportunities for businesses, farmers, educators and health care providers.
But he says it’s sometimes difficult to get the private sector to fund such projects without incentives.
