Iron Range Plant to be Temporarily Idled

Cliffs Natural Resources has announced they will be temporarily idling its United Taconite Facility on the Iron Range.

The United Taconite Thunderbird Mine is located in Eveleth and it’s processing facility is in Forbes.

The mine employs 503 people.

The company’s Chairman, President and CEO Lourenco Goncalves made the announcement during a second quarter earnings conference call Wednesday morning.

He said part of the reason they made their decision was because of their current inventory level.

Goncalves said they will execute the idle of UTAC in a manor to ensure they can promptly bring production back as soon as the level demands from clients justifies it.

Fox 21’s Maya Holmes will have more details tonight on Fox 21 News at 6 and 9.
