Duluth will host Hockey Day Minnesota 2016 in February, at Bayfront Park.
The Minnesota Wild and FOX Sports North made the official announcement Thursday.
Hockey Day Minnesota features high school games played outdoors.  The 2016 event on February 6th will feature Duluth East against Lakeville North, in a rematch of the 2015 Class AA state championship game.  Also, Denfeld will face off against Section 7A rival Eveleth-Gilbert.
“The hockey experience has been such a core part of what Duluth is,” said Mayor Don Ness.  “We’re just so excited that the eyes of the state and region will be turned towards Duluth this coming winter.”
Duluth was a logical choice for Hockey Day, because of the city’s long-standing connection to outdoor hockey.
“I think it was when, not if Duluthians,” said committee member Pat Heffernan.  “We needed to have this here.  So we started to talk about when should we have it.  The big one we kept coming to was right here.  We want this to be a community event.”
2016 will be the 10th Hockey Day Minnesota.  Other Northland hosts include Baudette (2007, 2008), Hermantown (2010) and Grand Rapids (2013).
An outdoor girls high school game is often part of Hockey Day, but Minnesota State High School League playoffs will be underway on February 6th.
A college game will be included in FS North’s coverage.  Those details will be announced later.
