The first ever Ely marathon is a little more than a month and a half away and people there are getting excited.

Event organizers told Fox21 they were told to expect just 150 participants their first year of the marathon.

So far, they’ve exceeded that number as 400 runners are signed up.

The full and half marathon are set to take place the last weekend in September.

The race is a Boston qualifier.

The course will offer scenic views of the fall colors and a mix of terrain, with at least 8-miles of gravel.

“It’s an amazing course. It’s mostly in the woods. We do end it inEely and go thru historic Winston, most of it is in the woods. It’s beautiful around several lakes,” said Ely Chamber of Commerce Event Coordinator Wendy Lindsay.

It’s just the first of a handful of new events being held in Ely to fill up their calendar throughout the year and fill gaps in tourism.

The events calendar is already compiled for 2016, complete with a new gathering, The Great American Canoe Festival.

There is still time to sign up for the race: http://www.elymarathon.com/
