History tours along the pier in Canal Park are education tourists and locals.
The half hour tour given by the maritime visitors center starts at the Lift Bridge and goes up to the light house.
Tour guides focus on the history of the Canal Park area, explaining how the canal got there, what facts people might not know about the Lift Bridge and they also tell stories of shipwrecks on the lake.
Sara Summers-Luedtke, a Park Ranger, says it’s nice to have more one-on-one time with visitors when it gets so busy in the summer.
“The port that we have here is really important, not only in our part of the country, but in the entire world as far as the grain industry and the steel industry goes,” said Luedtke, “a lot of people don’t go back and see the harbor and the ports and the boats back there so they don’t really know what goes on back there.”
The tours run twice a day at 1:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. Thursday through Monday and are free.
