A community in Northwestern Wisconsin has rallied together to build an outdoor veterans retreat.

It was just an idea four years ago and now it’s slowly becoming reality.

Thanks to generous donations the $3.5-Million dollar project is getting off the ground, located just 35-miles south of Superior.

Early next spring the Dairyland Outdoor Veterans Retreat will be open for vets and their families.

“We want them to relax and enjoy nature, enjoy their families,” said Rod Wilson with Dairyland Outdoor Veterans Retreat.

The retreat is a way to give back to our country’s heroes.

The community of Dairyland decided to utilize the property to show appreciation for those who have served.

“A fellow like me who didn’t get appreciated one bit when I came home from Vietnam and I see these young guys with missing arms and legs, it’s I feel like I’m doing more now than I did in Vietnam to be truthful,” said Wilson.

The 14-acre campground, just west of Dairyland offers a picturesque escape complete with an RV park, tenting and even seven cabins.

To some, the retreat is much more than a way to thank those who served it is a way to unite the community.

“The town of Dairyland is one of the poorest towns in Douglas County. This is the only chance that we have to enhance the area in my mind because we are utilizing the ATV trails and snowmobile trails, hunting, fishing, outdoors activities – that’s what Dairyland has to offer,” said Ron Deyo with Dairyland Outdoor Veterans Retreat.

The project has been made possible so far with a lot of free or reduced price for materials and labor, as well as monetary donations.

It will be a big impact once the retreat is finished for a small town of nearly 200 people.

The retreat will be handicap accessible.
