Hibbing Man Pleads Not Guilty to Drug Charges

A Hibbing man has pleaded not guilty to serious drug charges.

Thomas Baumchen, 31, is accused of having 47 grams of methamphetamine and more than $5,000 in cash on him at a campsite in Itasca County.

Authorities said they also found several glass smoking pipes, a digital scale, and several new empty baggies.

According to the criminal complaint, he tried swimming away from a deputy and K9 unit when they found him near Bower Lake.

He was later arrested.

Baumchen is charged with two counts of the felony crime of controlled substance crime in the first degree.

Bail is at $100,000.

His next court appearance is scheduled for October 5 at 9:30 a.m.

Records show Baumchen has been convicted of several crimes in the past including escape from custody, controlled substance crimes, domestic assault and fleeing a peace officer.
