A local nonprofit is equipping students with supplies before they head back to school.

Union Gospel Mission in downtown Duluth will host their annual backpack drive Thursday from 9:30am to 11:30am and 1:30pm to 4:30pm.

Staff will be handing out nearly 200 book bags filled with basic school supplies.

They are still in need of donations.

“There’s just an enormous need for it, we have a lot of needy families,” Union Gospel Mission administrative assistant Tina Vernor said. “You know the community, we don’t want to see the children suffer for it. For me I think that the children are most important.”

Donations can be dropped off at their site on 219 E 1st Street.

UGM will also be giving out school supplies next week.
