The Vigilant Guard 2015 exercise took over the laker ship American Victory, Thursday.

Soldiers from the Minnesota National Guard’s 55th Civilian Support Team trained with the Duluth Fire Department in a mock radiological spill scenario.

The fictitious scenario saw crews responding to reports of a sick ship passenger showing signs of radiation posioning.

After the passenger was diagnosed by Duluth Fire’s Chemical Response Unit soldiers from the 55th swept the ship searching for the source of the contamination.

Military officials say this type of scenario provides responders with realistic training that helps better prepare them, should they ever have to respond to an actual event.
