A new grant is helping Essentia Health deliver a special service to patients in rural areas.

The USDA awarded the hospital $213,564 to expand its access to telemedicine services.

Essentia will add 26 more telemedicine carts that will allow patients to consult with a long distance health care specialist through video instead of in person.

“It helps to avoid travel for patients and their families which is a lot of times they’re pretty sick and traveling is really hard,”said Maureen Ideker, Essentia Health registered nurse and director of telehealth for Essentia

Essentia had more than 2,500 telehealth visits last year.
