“It will be a good thing for the community,” Duluth director of planning Keith Hamre said.

A mixed used development is being proposed for 624 East 1st Street.

The vacant building used to be the home of Firestone Tires, now Kleiman Reality is proposing to build four apartments on the second floor and some type of commercial use on the first floor along with parking.

Exact details have yet to be disclosed.

The Duluth Planning Commission tells FOX 21 that will be fleshed out at a later review.

“It’s a very good use, it’s a good reuse of this building. “The former automotive business was really geared towards when Superior Street had a number of automotive dealers in this area and that this is kind of the last one, the last remnants of that former commercial use.”

Before the project gets the green light, the Duluth Planning Commission has to look at the landscaping, parking and other exterior factors of the building.

If you are interested in hearing more about this project, the public meeting will take place next Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.
