Scanlon residents are petitioning the state of Minnesota to conduct a study on the benefits of merging their city with Cloquet.
Seventy-one residents have signed the petition which is being verified by Carlton County before being sent to the state.
Scanlon and Cloquet already share police and fire services, but operate under separate municipal governments.
Once a merger study is complete, the residents of both cities would be able to vote on whether or not to merge the independent municipalities.
In addition to a pro and con benefit analysis a merger study would also recommend how the unified municipality should be structured with regard to number of City Councilors and Mayor’s office.
