Police: Suspicious Package Was Actually Spoiled Meat

Police say a suspicious package that prompted the evacuation of a high school and two dorms at the University of Wisconsin-Superior turned out to be full of spoiled meat.

The package was found on top of a sewer cover near Ross Hall on the UW-Superior campus about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A UW-Superior spokesman said it was wrapped in newspaper.

Superior High School and Ross and Hawkes Halls were evacuated.

Superior Police Assistant Chief Matt Markon said in a statement that bomb-disposal units determined the package wasn’t an explosive.

Road closures and evacuations were lifted at 8:15 p.m.

The statement says UW-Superior officials went through surveillance camera footage and identified the student who left the package.

Markon says it turned out to contain meat that had been left in a car and started to spoil.
