Minnesota’s justices of the state’s highest court came to UMD Wednesday night for an informal dinner with community members.

The visit is a way for judges to get out of St. Paul and educate people about the people’s court.

“We do a lot of homework. We do a lot of reading. We give the lawyers a chance to tell us what they think the rules should be. And we listen to the arguments and evidence and look to see what the rule is based on other cases that we’ve already decided,” said Chief Justice Lorie Gildea, of the Minnesota Supreme Court.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments of a real case in front of more than 1,000 students at Denfeld High School.
