BCA: Aitkin Co. Deputy Shot, Killed at St. Cloud Hospital

Suspect Subdued With Stun Gun, Died Shortly After

Authorities say a suspect in a domestic incident grabbed a gun from an Aitkin County sheriff’s deputy at St. Cloud Hospital and killed the officer.

Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans says hospital security officers then subdued the suspect with a stun gun, and he died soon afterward.

It happened around 5:15 a.m. Sunday.

The deputy was identified as 60-year-old Steven Sandberg, while the suspect was 50-year-old Danny Hammond.

BCA and hospital officials declined to say at a news conference why Hammond was being treated at the hospital.

And they would not specify why the hospital asked the sheriff’s department to station a guard in his room, except to say it was due to the seriousness of the domestic incident, which happened sometime earlier in the week.
