Funeral Services Set for Slain Aitkin County Deputy

A memorial service to honor the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy who was killed in the line of the duty, will be held on Friday in Aitkin. 

Deputy Steven Sandberg, 60,  was shot and killed Sunday morning by an inmate he was monitoring at a St. Cloud Hospital.  

The incident happened around 5:15 in the morning when 50-year-old Danny Hammond got out of bed and engaged in an altercation with Sandberg, taking his gun and fatally shooting him. 

A public visitation for Deputy Sandberg will take place on Thursday, October 22 from 2 to 7 p.m. at Aitkin United Methodist Church at 104 2nd Street Northwest. 

Funeral services for the fallen officer will take place on Friday, October 23 starting at 11 a.m. at Aitkin High School at 306 2nd Street Northwest.  The public is welcome to attend. 

A burial service will take place following the funeral at Bennettville Cemetery on County Road 11, about nine miles South of Aitkin.
