Lakers Carried 9.8 Million Tons of Cargo in September

U.S. flag Great Lakes freighters moved 9.8 million tons of cargo last month, a decrease of 8 percent compared to this time last year. 

The numbers were also down one percent compared to the month’s long-term average. 

Iron ore cargo shipments were down 20 percent. 

Coal cargo increased ten percent ,  while limestone loadings increased six percent. 

Year-to-date, Great Lakes shipping cargo totals 62.2. million tons, an increase of 3.6 percent compared to this time last year, but a decrease of 1.4 percent compared to the long-term average for the first three quarters.
