Republicans Nominate Paul Ryan for House Speaker
Republicans officially nominated Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan to become the next House Speaker.
Ryan easily defeated GOP Congressman Daniel Webster in Wednesday’s election, winning by a landslide of 200 votes to Webster’s 43.
The move sets Ryan up to be the youngest speaker in the House since before the Civil War. Ryan is 45 years old.
The full House of Representatives is set to officially approve the nomination on Thursday.
Ryan will succeed House Speaker John Boehner, who announced his resignation last month citing turmoil in the house.
Ryan said Wednesday that his nomination “brings a new day in the House of Representatives.”
“We have an obligation in here in the people’s house to do the people’s business,” said Ryan ,” We are going to respect the people by representing the people.”
