Wife, Son of Dead Illinois Cop Under Investigation

Authorities are investigating the wife and son of a Fox Lake police officer who killed himself to avoid being exposed in an embezzlement scheme.

At a news conference Wednesday, police announced Lieutenant Charles Gliniewicz carefully staged his own death after learning he was about to be exposed for stealing thousands of dollars from the Youth Explorer’s Club.

Police said their investigation points to at least two others being involved in the embezzlement scheme.

An official close to the investigation told the Associated Press that Gliniewicz’s wife Melodie and son D.J. are now under investigation.

Melodie Gliniewicz helped her husband run the Fox Lake Police Explorer Post. His son has repeatedly said that Gliniewicz “never once” thought of killing himself.

Gliniewicz died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on September 1.

Early that morning, he radioed dispatchers to say he was pursuing three suspicious men on foot.

Dispatchers lost contact with him, and responding officers found him dead with his weapon nearby.

Gliniewicz’s death triggered a massive manhunt and investigation, costing upwards of $300,000.

Authorities revealed that the officer elaborately staged a crime scene, scattering his pepper spray, baton, and other equipment before shooting himself.

Gliniewicz stole money in the five-figure range to pay for personal purchases, mortgage payments and travel.

The Village of Fox Lake was conducting an internal audit that Gliniewicz believed would lead back to him.

“Gliniewicz committed the ultimate betrayal to the citizens he served and the entire law enforcement community,”  said Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Commander George Filenko.

The family released a statement after the announcement saying “it has been another day of deep sorrow for the Gliniewicz family.”

An organization that helps families of officers killed in the line of duty is asking the Gliniewicz family to return a $15,000 donation made in his honor.
