The project is called Build Up Duluth and the hope is that with new homes there will be new life breathed into Duluth’s housing stock.

Today they kicked off construction of their first model home.

The first target area for build up Duluth is in the central and east hillsides where they’ve spent the last few years clearing lots in the area.

They are now in the second phase to build two model homes.

The goal isn’t just to increase home value with build up Duluth, there are other benefits to this project.

“New houses will bring in new home buyers and builders. It will create jobs and create tax revenue that can be used police, fire fighters, roads and other city needs,” said Jill Knutson-Kaske, HRA Executive Director.

The housing and redevelopment authority of Duluth is providing incentives for the construction of around 45 homes in that area over the next 60 months. They plan to have two model homes ready to view by 2016.
