Chicago Cop Charged with Murder in Shooting Death of Black Teen

A white Chicago police officer has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a black teenager.

Officer Jason Van Dyke was charged with first degree murder Tuesday.

The charges stem from Van Dyke shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times in October of 2014.

Police say he was shot after refusing to drop a knife and lunging at officers.

The attorney for Van Dyke says the officer was in fear for his life and opened fire on McDonald.

The shooting was captured on police dashcam video. Attorneys for the McDonald family say the video contradicts the police version of events.

A judge has given the city until the end of the day Wednesday to release the video to the public.

People who have seen the video say it shows McDonald armed with a small knife and walking away from officers.

Van Dyke then opened fire on McDonald from about 15 feet away, and keeps shooting after the teen falls to the ground.

An autopsy showed McDonald was shot 16 times in the back, head, chest, arms and legs.
