Foreign Ship, Crew Still Stuck Outside of Duluth Harbor

A German-operated cargo ship and it’s crew have been stuck at anchor outside of the Duluth harbor for nearly a month.

The ship is currently under investigation for unspecified environmental violations.

Officials say it does not appear a resolution is in sight, despite the upcoming closure of the St. Lawrence Seaway for the winter.

The U.S. Coast Guard says the Cornelia is being investigated for “alleged violations of U.S. environmental regulations.

Both the ship and crew are prohibited from leaving Duluth until they get clearance.

The Coast Guard won’t comment on what the violations were, except to say they didn’t place in Duluth.

Adele Yorde, the spokeswoman for the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, says that these types of detentions only happen about once or twice a year, and usually don’t take so long to resolve.
