It’s ‘A Lure of Lights’ In Downtown Hayward
Hayward has turned its downtown business district into a holiday light display again this year.
Jan Beatty of Sophie’s Dog Bakery said the “A Lure of Lights” display started as a way to get people downtown between the snowmobile season and Christmas, and so far it’s been working.
Beatty said the annual illumination brings people to downtown Hayward from areas in and outside Sawyer County.
Those visitors to the downtown area spend money in local restaurants and shops, buying food and Christmas gifts.
The increase in business more than offsets the cost of paying for the eco-friendly LED lights that adorn the store fronts, according to Beatty.
The colorful lights are turned on at dusk, each night, and remain static throughout the week, in consideration of the many apartments above the downtown businesses.
On weekends, however, the lights are synchronized to three different Christmas songs playing at 10 minute intervals.
The light display will continue through the Christmas holiday, before being discontinued.
The lights will remain attached to the store fronts, unlit, through March or April, depending on the weather.
They will make a special appearances during Hayward’s various Birkie events in 2016.
