Duluth’s Best Bread Emphasizes Importance of Starters

Cooking Connection: Bread Starters

Duluth’s Best Bread recently opened in Duluth.

It is a bakery that specializes in sourdough bread. They do French pastries as well.

Michael Lillegard, co-owner of Duluth’s Best Bread, says it’s necessary to use a “starter” when making bread.

A “starter” is a mixture of flour and water.

Lillegard says the “starter” should be mixed by hand and then it should sit.

This will then be a combination of yeast and bacteria used for different bread you would make in the future.

About once a day you should “feed” your “starter” by adding more flour to keep the consistency.

Duluth’s Best Bread is located at 2632 W. 3rd St., Duluth, MN 55806.

The store is open every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

You can get their bread any day of the week at Whole Foods Co-op.

Thursday, December 17 is the last day for Christmas orders. You can make a purchase at their website
