Local Groups Calling on Superior Mayor to Resign

Several local groups are calling on Superior Mayor Bruce Hagen to resign following controversial remarks he made on Facebook about the President and First Lady.

The Superior African Heritage Community and Justice City Coalition, among others, are asking for Hagen’s immediate resignation, a complete retraction of the comments, and a public and written apology to the people of Superior, President Obama and Michelle Obama.

The groups say if there is no response or action from Hagen by the end of the day on Christmas Eve, they will take part in a complete shutdown of all traffic and business entering the Mayor’s Office and Superior City Hall starting Monday morning.

The Superior African Heritage Community says they will also participate in an economic boycott of any and all city of Superior and Mayoral sponsored events.

The backlash comes after Hagen commented on a photo of First Lady Michelle Obama.  Hagen said, “Unbelievable! She and her Muslim partner have destroyed the fabric of Democracy that was so very hard fought for.”

Hagen told Fox 21 Monday night the comment was made in response to a friend’s comment.

Hagen said he was exercising his freedom of speech.

He says he doesn’t know if he regrets writing the comment, but stands by what he wrote.

Five City Councilors have also called for Hagen to retract the remarks or resign.

Councilor Graham Garfield says a recall is not out of the question if Hagen doesn’t comply, however, that would be left up to the public.

Hagen will hold a news conference on Wednesday.
