Former Charleston Cop charged with Murder released from Jail

A former police officer charged with murder in the death of an unarmed driver who ran away from a traffic stop has been released from a South Carolina jail.

Online records show that Michael Slager was released around 5:30 Monday night, about an hour after a judge allowed him to be released on a $500,000 surety bond.

Slager’s lawyer renewed the request for bail after a trial date was set for October 31.

Prosecutors opposed bail, saying Slager was a danger to the community and a flight risk.

Slager was charged with murder in the 2015 shooting death of Walter Scott in North Charleston.

A bystander recorded video of Slager shooting Scott in the back multiple times as he ran away.

Scott’s family also opposed bail, but after the hearing asked the community to remain calm.
